About call topics

Who can use this: Any team member

    Available on: Any Gong plan

    Ideal for: Sales rep

Topics are subjects that Gong automatically detects as recurring across your company's calls, such as pricing discussions, small talk, or deal wrap-ups. They appear on call pages, in search filters, and in team statistics.

Where topics appear

On the call page

Topics are shown on the call page, immediately below the call screen. Each topic is named and color-coded. The subject discussed most is marked as the main topic.

Click any topic to jump to the point in the call where that subject was discussed.

Filter calls by Call topic in Search to find calls where a specific subject came up, or where it was notably absent. You can also filter by the percentage of the call a topic occupied, which is useful for finding calls where a subject dominated the conversation.

In team statistics

Managers can review topic data on the Insights page, under the Team tab. Topic statistics show how often each subject comes up across the team and how much time is spent on it. Review them to compare topic patterns across reps or track whether a new initiative is making it into calls.

Base and custom topics

Gong provides a base topic model that is active by default. It covers generic subjects in English, including:

  • Call Setup: References to starting the call, such as sharing screen links or starting the recording.

  • Small Talk: Casual conversation unrelated to business topics.

  • Next Steps: Discussion of follow-up actions, timelines, and future meetings.

  • Pricing: References to cost, budget, discounts, and price comparisons.

  • Wrap-up: Closing remarks at the end of the call.

Your company may also have custom topics: subjects specific to your products, teams, or business. Custom topics are built by your business admin working with a Gong Revenue Architect (RA). They can be created in any language that Gong supports for transcription. Learn more about setting up the AI Topic Tagger.

Note:

Similar topics may appear merged on the call page when Gong detects they cover overlapping content. This is a display grouping only, not a change to your topic models.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create my own topic?

No. Topics are generated from topic models that Gong builds for your company in collaboration with your Revenue Architect. If your company needs topics specific to your business, contact your business admin or Revenue Architect to request a custom topic model.

Why does the same topic appear more than once on a call?

Topics can recur if the subject came up at multiple points in the call. Each occurrence is tracked separately so you can jump to any specific moment. If two topics appear to cover very similar content, they may be related topics in your company's model rather than duplicates.

Are topics available in languages other than English?

The base topic model covers English calls. Custom topic models can be built for any language that Gong supports for transcription. Contact your business admin if you need topics in another language.

Why do I see different topics than my colleagues?

Topics are generated per workspace. If your company uses multiple workspaces, each one may have a different set of custom topics. The base topics are the same across all workspaces.

Why don’t I see topics on my calls?

Topics only appear if your company as a topic model configured. Contact your Tech admin or Revenue Architect to check whether topic models are enabled for your workspace.
