When a target CSV upload fails, Gong returns a list of errors before writing any data. Errors fall into two categories: problems with the file itself, and problems with individual rows. Find the error type below and follow the fix.
File-level errors
These errors affect the whole file and prevent any rows from being processed.
Empty file
The file contains no records. Add your target data rows before uploading.
Wrong file format
The upload must be a .CSV file. Save your spreadsheet as CSV before uploading.
Missing or unrecognized column names
Column names are validated and are case-sensitive. The required columns are Team member identifier, Is Team, Period, and Value. Currency target files also require a Currency column. Restore the original column names from the template without changing capitalization or spelling. Use Download template on the Targets page to get a fresh template if needed.
Columns are not separated correctly
Values must be separated by commas. If your spreadsheet software uses a different delimiter (such as semicolons or tabs), change the export settings to use comma as the separator before saving.
Too many records
CSV uploads are limited to 10,000 records per file. Split your data into multiple files if needed and upload them separately. Large uploads near the limit may take up to 1 minute to process.
Duplicate records
Each row must have a unique combination of team member identifier, Is Team value, and Period. Remove duplicate rows before re-uploading.
Row-level errors
These errors are reported per row: Gong returns the specific rows that failed. Fix each one and re-upload the file.
Invalid or missing team member identifier
Each row must identify the team member using either their email address or their 18-digit CRM ID. Check the identifier against your Gong team member records and correct any typos or mismatches.
Team member not found in Gong
The identifier in the row does not match any team member in your Gong workspace. Verify the email or CRM ID is correct. If the team member has not yet been added to Gong, add them first and then re-upload.
Invalid period format
Period values must follow one of these exact formats:
Monthly: Month FYyyyy, for example January FY2026
Quarterly: Qx FYyyyy, for example Q1 FY2026
Annual: FYyyyy, for example FY2026
Check capitalization and spacing. Do not use calendar year formats (for example, 2026 Q1) without the FY prefix.
Invalid target value
Target values must be numeric. Remove any currency symbols, commas used as thousand separators, or text from the value column.
Invalid currency code
Currency targets require a standard three-letter currency code (for example, USD, EUR, GBP). If your company has multiple currencies enabled and no code is specified, Gong applies the company default currency. Verify the currency code is correct and in the ISO 4217 format.
