Create a target

Targets set the performance benchmarks that dashboards and Forecast boards use to show attainment alongside metric values. Creating a target is a two-stage process: prepare your data in a CSV file, then create the target in Gong and upload the file to it. To update, export, or delete targets after they are created, see Manage your targets.

Stage 1: Prepare your CSV

Before you create the target in Gong, download the template and fill in your target records. The template format differs between Currency targets (revenue-based) and Unit targets (count-based), so choose your type before you download.

Download the template

To download the target template:

  1. From the left sidebar, click Admin center.

  2. In the Settings tab, click Targets on the Data Studio card.

  3. Click Download template and select your target type:

    • Currency: Use for revenue-based targets such as quota in dollars.

    • Unit: Use for count-based targets such as number of deals.

Fill in the template

Each row in the CSV represents one target assignment for one person or team in one period. Complete the following columns:

  • Identifier: the team member's email address or 18-digit CRM ID. If the person is not in Gong, the row fails validation.

  • Value: the quota amount as a plain number. Do not include currency symbols, commas as thousand separators, or text.

  • Period: the time period in one of these exact formats:

    • Monthly: Month FYyyyy, for example, January FY2026

    • Quarterly: Qx FYyyyy, for example, Q1 FY2026

    • Annual: FYyyyy, for example, FY2026

  • Is Team: false for an individual target assignment, true for a team rollup. Setting Is Team to true creates a row that measures the combined attainment of the person's direct reports, not their own personal quota. A manager can have both in the same file: one row with Is Team: false for their individual quota and one with Is Team: true for their team rollup, covering the same period.

  • Currency code (Currency targets only): a standard three-letter ISO code such as USD or EUR. Leave blank to apply your company's default currency. If multiple currencies are used, specify the code on each row that differs.

Tip:

Save a copy of your completed CSV before uploading. Gong does not store the original file, and you will need it if you ever need to re-upload or audit your target assignments.

Before you upload, confirm that your file meets these requirements:

  • The file is saved as .CSV with commas as the column separator. Other delimiters (semicolons, tabs) are not supported.

  • Column names match the template exactly. They are case-sensitive and must not be renamed.

  • Each combination of identifier, Is Team, and Period is unique. Duplicate rows are rejected.

  • The file contains no more than 10,000 rows. Large uploads near the limit may take up to one minute to process.

Note:

If any row fails, Gong returns a list of errors and no records are saved. See Troubleshoot target file uploads for help with common errors.

Stage 2: Create the target in Gong

With your CSV ready, create the target in Gong and upload your file.

To create a target:

  1. On the Targets page, click Add target.

  2. Under Target info, enter a name for the target. Choose a name that identifies it clearly in lists and when selecting it for dashboards or Forecast board columns.

  3. Select the target type that matches your CSV template:

    • Currency: revenue-based targets.

    • Unit: count-based targets. Enter the Display name for the unit, for example, "Deals" or "Accounts".

  4. (Optional) Add a description.

  5. Click Upload and select your CSV file.

  6. If validation fails, Gong returns a list of errors. Fix each one in your file and re-upload. See Troubleshoot target file uploads for help.

  7. Click Save.

Tip:

For best results, create one target per metric you want to track attainment for.

Tip:

Each person can have values for multiple periods and target types within the same file. For example, monthly, quarterly, and annual rows all in one upload.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if someone in my CSV is not a Gong team member?

If a CSV row references a team member email or CRM ID that does not match anyone in Gong, the upload fails. Gong returns an error identifying the unresolved entries. Add the team member to Gong first, or remove the row from the CSV, then re-upload.

Do targets apply to all dashboards that use the associated metric?

Targets are available to widgets that display the associated metric. They can also appear in formula metrics and forecast board columns. Whether a specific widget shows the target value depends on the widget's configuration.

What are some examples of targets I can create?

Common targets include:

  • Bookings $: Closed-won revenue per quarter, paired with the Bookings $ metric to show attainment against quota.

  • Pipeline created $: New pipeline generated in a period, to track how much pipeline each rep is building.

  • Win rate #: Percentage of deals won out of all closed, used alongside a formula metric of the same name.

  • Avg sales price $: Average deal size for won opportunities, for coaching and deal quality tracking.
