Add a custom chart widget to a dashboard

Who can use this: Business admin

Available on: Gong Forecast

Ideal for: RevOps

Required permissions: Manage dashboards

The Custom chart widget lets you choose the metric, the breakdown, the visualization type, and optionally a drilldown. Use it when the view you need isn't covered by the other widget types.

Step 1: Open the dashboard

You add widgets from inside an existing dashboard, so start by navigating to the one you want to build out. If you haven't created a dashboard yet, do that first.

To open the dashboard:

  1. From the left sidebar, click Dashboards.

  2. Select the dashboard you want to add the widget to.

  3. Click + New widget at the top right of the dashboard.

  4. Select Custom chart.

Tip:

If you have a lot of dashboards and aren't sure where to find yours, see Find and organize dashboards for guidance on searching, filtering, and navigating the Dashboards page.

Step 2: Choose an analysis type and configure the metric

Before you configure anything else, decide whether you want to use a predefined metric or build a custom analysis from scratch. The dropdown at the top right of the settings panel shows the current selection. The two types work differently, so choosing the right one first saves you from having to reconfigure later.

Predefined metric uses existing metrics: the same metrics you'd find elsewhere in the platform. This is the right starting point for most charts, since the data is already tracked and maintained.

Custom analysis lets you build a one-off aggregation directly from a CRM field, useful when the metric you need doesn't exist as a predefined option. Note that switching to custom analysis clears any predefined metric you've already configured.

To configure the analysis type and metric:

  1. Check the dropdown at the top right of the settings panel. Click it to switch between Predefined metric and Custom analysis.

  2. If using Predefined metric: In the Metric section, click Select metric and choose a metric. For example, Calls Completed for an activity chart or Won Amount for a revenue view.

  3. If using Custom analysis: Click the object type dropdown and select the object you want to analyze, such as Deals. Then click Select aggregation type and field and choose how to aggregate the data. Note that if your analysis is account-based, a drilldown view is automatically selected and cannot be changed.

  4. (Optional) Refine what the metric shows using the following options:

    • Drilldown view: Select a list view to let viewers click into the chart bars to see the underlying records. The drilldown inherits the list view's columns and ordering but does not apply deal board filters. For account-based analyses, the drilldown view is preset and cannot be configured.

    • Filter: A team member filter and a date filter are added automatically when the widget is created and respond to the dashboard's selectors by default. To add more filters, click + Add filter. If you set a filter to a fixed value, that filter will no longer respond to dashboard-level selections.

    • Additional metrics: Click + Add metric at the top of the settings panel. To rename or remove a metric, click the more options icon on the metric card.

Step 3: Add breakdowns

Breakdowns split the chart into segments. For example, breaking down pipeline by forecast category shows how much sits in Commit vs. Best Case vs. Pipeline each week. You can add up to two breakdowns.

Note:

You cannot break down by numerical fields or rich text fields.

Avoid breaking down by high-cardinality fields like rep name across a large team. Those produce charts with too many series to be readable.

To add a breakdown:

  1. In the Breakdown by section, click + Add.

  2. Select a field to break down by.

Step 4: Choose a visualization type and save

The visualization type controls how the data is displayed. You can change it at any time without affecting the underlying data configuration, so start with whatever looks right and adjust later if needed. When using the Table visualization, you can also apply color coding to the columns: select Assign display colors to value ranges on the metric card to highlight high, medium, and low values.

To choose a visualization type and save:

  1. Click the visualization picker at the top right of the Preview panel.

  2. Select one of the following: Vertical bars, Stacked vertical bars, Horizontal bars, Stacked horizontal bars, Line, Pie, or Table.

  3. Click Save.

Dashboard filters:

The Apply dashboard filters to this widget toggle is on by default. Unlike the KPI or Performance widgets, the Custom chart widget doesn't have its own Team and Period fields. It always follows the dashboard's selectors unless you disable the toggle. Disable it if this chart should show fixed data regardless of what viewers change on the dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between predefined metric and custom analysis?

Predefined metrics are managed and shared across the platform. They stay consistent as your configuration changes. Custom analysis lets you build a one-off aggregation from a CRM field directly in the widget. Use predefined metrics for recurring dashboards where consistency matters, and custom analysis for ad-hoc exploration of data that isn't tracked as a formal metric.

Why does my breakdown make the chart hard to read?

You're likely breaking down by a field with too many unique values. A breakdown by forecast category (four or five values) works well. A breakdown by rep name across a 50-person team produces 50 series, which is not useful. Stick to fields with a small, stable set of values. Also note that numerical and rich text fields cannot be used as breakdown fields.

Can I use both predefined metric and custom analysis in the same widget?

No. The analysis type applies to the whole widget. If you switch from predefined to custom analysis, the existing metric configuration is cleared.
