Add a KPI widget to a dashboard

Prev Next

Who can use this: Business admin

Available on: Gong Forecast

Ideal for: RevOps

Required permissions: Manage dashboards

The KPI widget displays a primary metric or forecast submission as a headline value, optionally compared with a target or a second metric. It's the right choice when you want team members to see a key figure the moment they open a dashboard, without having to dig into a chart.

Step 1: Open the dashboard

You add widgets from inside an existing dashboard, so start by navigating to the one you want to build out. If you haven't created a dashboard yet, do that first.

To open the dashboard:

  1. From the left sidebar, click Dashboards.

  2. Select the dashboard you want to add the widget to.

  3. Click + New widget at the top right of the dashboard.

  4. Select KPI.

Tip:

If you have a lot of dashboards and aren't sure where to find yours, see Find and organize dashboards for guidance on searching, filtering, and navigating the Dashboards page.

Step 2: Choose what to display

This is where you define what the KPI widget actually displays. The metric or forecast submission you select becomes the headline number viewers see on the dashboard. Selecting the displayed metric or forecast number is the only required part of this step. The rest are optional refinements you can add now or come back to later.

To choose what to display:

  1. In the Settings section, select whether to display a Metric or a Forecast submission, and then click Select metric or Select Forecast submission and choose what to display. For example, select a Win Rate metric to track closing performance, or Pipeline Created to monitor top-of-funnel activity. If you choose a forecast submission, select whether it's an individual submission (the submission number of the selected individual) or a team rollup (the rollup number of the selected team member's direct reports submissions).

  2. (Optional) Set other display options:

    • Measure against target: Select the checkbox, then click Select target and choose a predefined target. This adds a progress bar so viewers can see at a glance how close the number is to the target.

    • Drilldown view: Click Drilldown view and select a list view. This lets viewers click the KPI number to open the underlying records without leaving the dashboard, useful when you want team members to be able to investigate what's behind the number quickly. The default view is derived from the selected metric. To change the default, select a different list view or create a new one by clicking Manage list views.

    • Filter: A team member filter and a date filter are added automatically and respond to the dashboard's selectors by default. To add more filters, click + Add filter. If you set a filter to a fixed value, that filter will no longer respond to dashboard-level selections.

    • Second metric: Click + Add metric at the top of the settings panel. A second Metric card appears. Configure it the same way. Useful for side-by-side comparisons like Pipeline Created alongside Pipeline Closed in one widget.

Step 3: Set the team and period

These two settings determine whose data appears in the widget and over what time range. The key decision is whether to fix these values or let them follow the dashboard. If you leave them dynamic, the widget updates whenever a viewer changes the dashboard's Team or Period selectors, which makes the same dashboard useful for different managers reviewing their own teams. If you fix the values, the widget always shows the same data regardless of what the dashboard filters are set to, which is useful when a widget should always reflect one specific team or timeframe.

To set the team and period:

  1. Under Select team and period, click Team member is and select a team or individual.

  2. Click Date period is and select a time period.

  3. Click Save.

Dashboard filters:

The Apply dashboard filters toggle is on by default, which means the widget responds to the dashboard's Team and Period selectors. If you set Team or Date period to a fixed value above, those settings override the dashboard selectors and the widget will always show that fixed data regardless of what viewers change. Only fix the values if this widget is intentionally scoped to one specific team or timeframe that should never change.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add more than two metrics to a KPI widget?

No. If you need to compare more than two metrics side by side, the Performance widget is a better fit: it shows multiple metrics in a single table across teams or individuals.

Why is the drilldown showing different records than I expected?

The drilldown opens the list view selected during setup. If the records or columns aren't what you expected, review that list view's configuration.

Why is my KPI widget not updating when I change the dashboard period?

The widget may have a fixed date period set in its settings. Open the widget settings, check whether Date period is is set to a specific fixed value rather than the dashboard period, and update it if needed.

Can I compare two different time periods in a KPI widget?

Yes. Create two KPI widgets with the same metric, each set to a different fixed period, and place them side by side on the dashboard. Viewers can compare the values directly without navigating away.

What are some good examples of KPI widgets?

These combinations work well across most revenue dashboards. The table shows a primary metric, an optional secondary for comparison, and a target where attainment tracking adds value.
