Catch up on a call

Who can use this: Any team member

Available on: Any Gong plan

Ideal for: Sales rep

Get up to speed on any call without watching it from the start. The outline, points of interest, and Gong Assistant each help you explore different parts of the conversation. For AI-generated summaries and briefs, see viewing call summaries and briefs.

When a question comes up about a specific part of the call, use the outline to jump straight to that moment. The outline divides the conversation into topic sections with timestamps so you can go directly to what matters.

To navigate with the outline:

  1. Open the call.

  2. Click the Outline tab in the left panel.

  3. Review the topics Gong has identified from the conversation.

  4. Click a topic to jump to that point in the recording and the transcript.

Note:

Short calls or calls with limited dialogue may produce fewer outline sections. If the outline is sparse, use the Transcript tab to search for specific words or phrases instead.

Review points of interest

For a different view of what was significant, review points of interest. These are moments Gong flagged automatically: questions asked, trackers mentioned, and key call moments, so you can spot what mattered without watching the recording.

To review points of interest:

  1. Open the call.

  2. Click the Points of interest tab in the left panel.

  3. Review the flagged moments listed by category.

  4. Click a moment to jump to that point in the recording.

Ask Gong Assistant

When you have a specific question about the call, use Gong Assistant to ask it directly. Rather than searching through the transcript, you get a cited answer based on the call and related account data, including account, deal, and participant information.

Note:

Gong Assistant requires a Gong Foundation seat. If you don't see the Assistant button, contact your admin to confirm whether Gong Foundation is enabled for your account.

To use Gong Assistant:

  1. Open the call.

  2. On the call page, click Assistant at the top right.

  3. Click into the text box and type your question, or choose from the suggested prompts:

    • Summarize this call: Generate a summary of the call.

    • Suggest next steps: Identify next steps from the call.

    • List objections: Review objections or concerns discussed in the call.

    • Draft follow-up: Generate a draft follow-up based on the call.

Note:

Gong Assistant generates its output from the call transcript. If the transcript is incomplete or was transcribed in the wrong language, the output may be affected. Transcribe the call again, then use Regenerate AI Content from the More actions icon before running the Assistant again.

Frequently asked questions

How is the brief different from the outline?

The brief gives you a narrative summary of the call, including what was discussed, the key takeaways, and the main points in a structured format. The outline gives you a navigational map of the conversation divided by topic, with timestamps you can click to jump directly to that part of the recording. Use the brief to catch up; use the outline to find specific moments.

How is Gong Assistant different from the brief?

The brief is automatically generated for every processed call and gives you a fixed-format summary. Gong Assistant lets you ask specific questions and get targeted outputs, such as next steps, objections, a follow-up draft, or answers to anything you want to explore. Use the brief to get oriented; use Gong Assistant when you need something specific.

The AI content looks wrong or incomplete, what should I do?

All AI content, including the outline, points of interest, and Gong Assistant output, is generated from the call transcript. If the transcript is incomplete or was transcribed in the wrong language, the AI content will be affected. For steps on fixing the transcript and regenerating content, see troubleshooting call summaries and briefs.

Can I use AI meeting prep before the call instead?

Yes. Gong's AI meeting prep page helps you prepare for an upcoming customer call with AI-generated summaries and insights from past account activity. See Get ready for meetings with AI meeting prep.
