Before you begin
Ensure you are using New Outlook. Classic Outlook is not supported.
You are logged in to Gong.
For admin deployment, ensure that you have access to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
Option A: Admin deploys for the whole company (recommended)
Admin deployment makes Gong Extension available to all team members automatically and enables email tracking. This is the recommended path for any team that needs email tracking in Outlook. If a team member installs it themselves, the add-in works, but tracking is not available.
To deploy for your company:
Follow the Microsoft instructions to deploy add-ins in the admin center.
Search for Gong Extension in the Microsoft AppSource integration during deployment.
Complete the deployment. The add-in becomes available to all team members in your company.
Note:
If team members have already installed the add-in themselves and you want to make email tracking available, re-install it for all team members at the admin level. This replaces their individual installations and enables tracking.
Option B: Individual team member installs
Team members can install the add-in on their own without admin involvement. Email tracking is not available with this installation method.
To install from Outlook:
Open Outlook.
Click Get Add-ins in the Outlook toolbar.
In Microsoft AppSource, search for Gong Extension or Gong for Outlook, depending on which extension you want to use.
Click Add or Get it now to install.
Follow the prompts to complete installation.
Open any email in Outlook and click the Gong icon in the toolbar.
Sign in with your Gong credentials and grant the requested permissions.
To install from Microsoft AppSource:
Go to the Gong Extension page or the Gong for Outlook page in Microsoft AppSource.
Click Get it now and follow the prompts.
Open any email in Outlook, click the Gong icon in the toolbar, sign in, and grant permissions.
Frequently asked questions
Why does tracking only work after company-wide admin installation?
Email tracking in Outlook requires the ReadWriteMailbox permission, which is only granted through an admin-level deployment. Individual installs use a more limited permission set that does not include the mailbox-level access tracking requires.
What if team members already installed the add-in before the admin deployed it?
Their individual installation works, but without tracking. When an admin deploys company-wide, it replaces the individual installations and tracking becomes available. Team members do not need to uninstall manually first.
What permissions does the add-in request?
Gong Extension requests ReadWriteMailbox permission when deployed by an admin.
Is Classic Outlook supported?
No. Gong Extension requires New Outlook. Classic Outlook is not supported.
What if my team does not use Engage?
Use Gong for Outlook instead. It provides meeting link automation without the Engage features and requires fewer permissions. If your company later adopts Engage, switch to Gong Extension at that point.
