Work with filters

Prev Next

Who can use this: Any team member

Available on: Any Gong plan

Filters can be combined in different ways to refine search results. Understanding how filters work can help you build more accurate searches and find the conversations you need.

Filter calls that match any specified value

Many filters allow you to select multiple values.

When multiple values are selected in the same text area or drop down, conversations that match any of the selected values are returned.

For example, if you select Adam Smith and John Browner in the Participants filter, the results include calls that contain Adam, John, or both participants.

Multiple participants filter

The same behavior applies to other filters that allow multiple values to be selected.

Filter calls that that match all specified values

Some filters include an Add icon that let you add another instance of the same filter.

When multiple instances of the same filter are added, calls must match all filter criteria.

For example, if one participant filter contains Adam Smith and a second participant filter contains John Browner, the results only include conversations that contain both Sarah and John.

Multiple AND filter

This can be useful when you want to find conversations involving specific combinations of participants, terms, or other filter values.

Use free-text filters

Some filters allow you to enter your own search terms instead of selecting values from a predefined list. These filters include:

  • Words or phrases

  • Call title

  • Words or phrases in slide title

  • Text in comment on call

Free-text filters support search operators that help you find more specific results.

Filter by an exact phrase

Use quotation marks (" ") to search for an exact phrase.

For example:"free trial"

Returns conversations containing the exact phrase free trial.

Filter for one term or another

Use the pipe character (|) to search for conversations containing one term or another.

For example:"price" | "cost"

Returns conversations containing price or cost.

Filter for calls containing all terms

Use the plus sign (+) to search for conversations containing multiple terms.

For example:"price" + "discount"

Returns conversations containing both price and discount.

Exclude terms from the results

Use a minus sign (-) to exclude terms from the results.

For example:"price" + (-"competitor")

Returns conversations containing price but not competitor.

You can exclude multiple terms by adding an exclusion for each term.

For example:"price" + (-"competitor") + (-"budget")

Returns conversations containing price but not competitor or budget.

Include or exclude results

Some filters include options that let you control whether matching results are included or excluded.

For example, you can search for conversations that contain the term competitor to find conversations where competitors were discussed. Alternatively, you can search for conversations that don't contain the term competitor to find conversations where competitors were not mentioned.

Similarly, tracker filters can be configured to return conversations that contain or don't contain a specific tracker.

Using these options can help you find conversations where something was discussed, or identify conversations where a term, phrase, or tracker was not mentioned.

Examples for filtering search results

Here are some ideas on how you can use the filters to find exactly the calls you’re looking for. If you are looking for:

A call that you owned?

In the Participants filter, select your own name and select the Hosted filter.

A call that someone on your team attended?

In the Participants filter, search by the team’s manager and choose “Anyone on <manager’s name> team’. This will give you calls that anyone on that team attended, including the manager.

A call that you and your teammate attended?

In the Participants filter, select your own name and then click the Add icon to open another Participant filter. Enter your colleague’s name. Now, the search results only include calls that both of you attended.

Calls in which a top performer successfully handled a specific objection?

You may want to find calls in which a top performer dealt with a specific type of objection that lead to a closed-won deal. In the Participants filter, enter their name, in the Trackers filter, select the tracker that identifies the specific objection.

A call in which you remember a few words or phrases?

In the Words or phrases filter, enter the words or phrases you remember saying or hearing. Use quotation marks if you remember the exact phrase. If you remember who said the words or phrases, select the party in the Mentioned by drop down.

A call that took place some time last quarter?

In the Date filter, select the date, month, week, or quarter when the call took place. You can also enter a custom date range. For example, if you know the call took place just around the New Year, enter the relevant months.

Calls in which a specific term wasn’t mentioned?

You may want to find calls in which a certain term was not mentioned. For example, a new product feature, or a competitor. In the Words or phrases filter, enter the word or phrase and then click the Results contain the term drop down below it. Select Results do not contain the term.
