Who can use this: Any team member
Available on: Gong Foundation
Required permissions: Use deep mode
Deep research is a mode in Gong Assistant for complex, strategic questions that require analysis across large amounts of information. It produces a comprehensive report with supporting evidence and sources rather than a quick answer.
Use Deep research when your question requires analysis at scale or a complex research process. Choose Deep research when a good answer requires analyzing a large number of conversations, deals, or accounts, or when the question involves multiple areas of investigation. For questions that can be answered with a more focused analysis, use Quick mode instead.

Credit usage
Deep research consumes credits. Before you start research, Gong displays the estimated number of credits required for the proposed research plan. The number of credits consumed is determined by the complexity of the analysis.
Beta customers participating in Deep research receive a credit allowance for the Beta period. Admins can review actual credit consumption in Gong's usage reports.
What Deep research can help you investigate
Deep research is designed for questions that require indepth analysis. Example use cases include:
Analyzing win and loss patterns across regions, segments, stages, or time periods.
Comparing closed-won and closed-lost deals to identify common patterns.
Conducting competitive analysis across customer conversations.
Analyzing customer sentiment, pain points, product feedback, or adoption trends.
Preparing research for QBRs, annual planning, or other strategic reviews.
How Deep research works
Deep research goes beyond a single question and response. It clarifies what you want to investigate, determines how to approach the analysis, and conducts multiple research cycles to build the report.
The research process includes:
Clarification: Questions that help define the research goal, dataset, time period, and expected output.
Research planning: A plan that breaks the original question into multiple areas to investigate.
Data segmentation: Analysis of relevant subsets of the data, such as won and lost deals, specific dates, or subjects.
Adaptive research: Analysis at the conversation, deal, or account level based on the question.
Multiple research cycles: Additional investigation when more analysis is needed to produce the report.
Supporting evidence: Sources and evidence included in the resulting report.
Run Deep research from question to report
Deep research takes you through three stages, from defining what you want to investigate to reviewing the completed report. Start with a well-defined research question, then work with Gong to refine and confirm the research before the analysis begins.
Step 1: Write an effective research question
The quality and scope of the report depend on how the research is defined before the analysis begins. Include enough information for Deep research to understand what you want to investigate and how you want the results presented.
A strong research question includes:
Business question: The question or outcome you need to understand.
Scope: The calls, accounts, deals, teams, regions, or segments to include.
Time period: The dates or business period to analyze.
Output: The comparisons, evidence, and recommendations to include in the report.
Example: Analyze competitor mentions in late-stage opportunities over the last two quarters. Compare competitors by frequency, positioning, pricing concerns, and win or loss outcome, and cite representative conversations.
Step 2: Run Deep research
Choose Deep mode explicitly when you want Gong Assistant to conduct Deep research. Gong Assistant does not automatically switch a question from Quick mode to Deep mode.
Before the research starts, Gong asks clarification questions and proposes a research plan. Use these stages to make sure the scope and expected output match what you want to investigate. The scope of the research affects the resulting report and credit usage.
To start Deep research:
Open Gong Assistant (from all available places)
Select Deep from the mode selector.
Enter your research question.
Answer Gong's clarification questions to define the scope, time period, population, and expected output.
Review the proposed research plan and estimated credit usage.
Confirm the plan and start the research.
Gong starts the analysis and creates the report. You'll receive an email when the report is ready.
Step 3: Review your research
Deep research can take longer than a Quick mode response because it investigates the question across a larger dataset and can perform multiple research cycles.
You will get an email notification when the Gong Assistant has generated a report. The report includes the results of the analysis together with supporting evidence and sources. You can ask follow-up questions or request clarification about the findings.
