Who can use this: Any team member

Available on: Gong Foundation

Ideal for: Sales manager

Required permissions: Manage AI Theme Spotter analyses

A theme analysis shows the topics customers raise most across many calls. Use it when you want to spot patterns, such as pricing concerns or objections, without listening to every call. You choose a question and the calls to look at, and AI Theme Spotter finds the themes.

Before you begin

  • You need the Manage AI Theme Spotter analyses permission to create an analysis. To write your own question, you also need the Manage AI Tracker settings permission.

  • Every question is based on an AI tracker, and that tracker must be published. For a suggested question, publish its AI tracker by Gong first. Go to Admin center > Agent Studio > AI Tracker.

  • Analyses leave out private calls and cover up to 50,000 calls.

  • Your company gets 20 analyses a month, plus 3 more for every 60 seats, up to 30 a month.

Create a theme analysis

Choose a question and filters, and Gong builds the analysis in the background. This usually takes up to six hours, and longer if the AI tracker is still processing past calls.

To create a theme analysis:

  1. From the left sidebar, click Insights, and select AI Theme Spotter.

  2. Click + New analysis.

  3. Select a question. You can choose from three kinds:

    • Suggested by Gong: Questions based on AI trackers by Gong, such as pricing reactions, customer concerns, objections, strategic business goals, customer pain, and decision criteria.

    • All questions: Questions based on AI trackers that your company created and published.

    • Create new question: Write your own question. Finish the sentence that starts "What are the most common" with the topic you want to find, such as "objections about pricing."

  4. To narrow the calls, click Edit filters and set a date range, participants, deal stage, account attributes, or outcomes. This step is optional.

    Note:

The AI tracker's own settings come first. If the tracker covers only US calls, an EMEA filter returns only US results. To analyze EMEA calls, use a tracker set up for EMEA. A tracker also cannot see calls from before it was published.

  5. Click Create analysis.

Note:

A question you write yourself creates a new AI tracker, so you also need the Manage AI Tracker settings permission. The tracker uses Gong credits to process the last 30 days of calls, and keeps using credits while it is active. Learn more about Gong credits.

Your analysis appears in the list at Insights > AI Theme Spotter. While it runs, its status is In progress. When the status changes to Completed, open the analysis to see the themes. To learn how, see View and explore a theme analysis.

Check the status of an analysis

Each analysis in your list shows one of these statuses:

  • In progress: Gong is still building the analysis.

  • Completed: The analysis is ready to open.

  • Insufficient data: Gong did not find enough calls where your question applies. Create a new analysis with broader filters or a different question.

  • Couldn't complete: The analysis did not finish. Open the menu at the right end of its row and select Rerun. If it keeps happening, select Contact support.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I run out of analyses for the month?

You cannot create a new analysis until your limit resets. The limit resets on the first day of the next month.

Why don't I see the question I want in the suggested list?

Suggested questions are based on AI trackers by Gong, and a tracker must be published before its question appears. To publish a tracker:

  1. Go to Admin center > Agent Studio > AI Tracker.

  2. Find the AI tracker for the topic you want, for example, Pricing reactions or Customer pain.

  3. Click Publish.

  4. Return to the analysis builder. The question now appears.
