Who can use this: Any team member
Available on: Any Gong plan
Calls made with web conferencing providers or telephony systems that integrate with Gong can be recorded and saved automatically.
After a call ends, Gong transcribes and analyzes it to generate AI-powered insights that help teams understand conversations, review key moments, and improve outcomes.
With calls recorded in Gong, you can:
Analyze conversations with AI-driven insights: Review transcripts and insights to understand customer interactions and identify patterns across calls.
Review critical moments: Go back to important parts of a call to catch details you may have missed and prepare for future meetings.
Share recordings with your team: Share calls to align on messaging, learn from each other, and give or receive feedback.
Stay focused during live conversations: With calls captured automatically, you can focus on the discussion instead of taking notes.
Which calls are automatically recorded
After a tech admin integrates Gong with your company’s email provider (Google Workspace or Microsoft Outlook), Gong scans calendars and identifies meetings that should be recorded.
Eligible meetings are imported into Gong. After the meeting ends, the recording, transcript, and AI-driven insights are available in Gong.
Your Tech admin controls:
Which calls are recorded
Which team members’ calls are recorded
How recording consent is obtained
Which web conferencing and telephony providers are supported
Internal and external calls
Gong determines whether a call is internal or external based on the meeting participants.
If all invitees are from your company, the meeting is considered internal.
Internal meetings are recorded only if your company is configured to record internal calls.
External meetings follow your company’s recording and consent configuration.
Meetings that are not recorded
Meetings that take place in physical meeting rooms or without a supported web conferencing provider may still appear in Gong.
In these cases, Gong imports meeting details such as the date, time, and participants, but no recording is available.
Manually recording calls
Some calls are not recorded automatically, such as private meetings or internal meetings excluded by company settings.
You can still record these calls by manually inviting the Gong assistant to the meeting. This indicates that you want Gong to record the call.
Manual recording limitations
Inviting the Gong assistant does not override all restrictions. A call will not be recorded if:
Consent is enforced and not given: If consent is required from meeting participants and was not provided, the call will not be recorded.
A user is set to never record: If a participating team member’s data capture settings are set to Never record, the call will not be recorded even if the Gong assistant is invited.
Contact your Tech admin to confirm data capture settings.
Recording methods
Gong records calls using one of the following methods, depending on company configuration and the conferencing provider.
Native recording
With supported providers, Gong records the call directly through the conferencing platform.
Native recording:
Does not add an additional participant to the call
Is available with Zoom when Native Zoom recording is enabled
Gong assistant recording
When native recording is not available, Gong adds a virtual participant to the meeting. This participant records the call.
The recording method is determined automatically based on company settings.
Call recording consent
Call recording consent determines whether participants are informed that a call is being recorded and whether permission is required before recording begins.
Consent requirements vary by country and, in some cases, by state.
Dual consent
Dual consent, also known as all-party or two-party consent, means that every participant must be informed before the call is recorded and choose whether to continue.
Consent may be:
Explicit, when participants verbally agree
Implicit, when participants are informed and remain on the call
For background on consent laws and regional requirements, see Sales call recording laws and compliance.
How consent applies in Gong
Consent behavior is controlled through company settings.
These settings determine:
When participants are notified
Whether recording starts automatically or only after consent is given
How consent applies across providers and meeting types
For configuration details, see Call recording and consent settings.
