Data redaction

Gong offers two data redaction features to automatically remove certain sensitive data from call recordings and the resulting transcripts: (1) numeric redaction and (2) PHI redaction redaction.

When redaction is enabled, Gong replaces certain text within a transcript with (REDACTED) and mutes the corresponding section in the audio. Once enabled, redaction applies to new calls and their transcripts. To apply it retroactively, contact Gong Support.

Important

Redacted data is not stored in Gong and can’t be recovered, not even by Gong. Once set, redaction applies to all new calls.

Numeric redaction

Numeric redaction removes sequences of digits from your calls and their related transcripts.

Numeric redaction:

  • Can be turned on and off by your company Gong admin.

  • Is applied to calls in Gong's hyper-optimized languages.

  • Doesn’t redact words, for example “thousand”, “million”, or “billion”.

The admin selects the number of digits in a sequence that should be redacted. When enabled, numbers that meet or exceed that threshold are redacted. For example, if you set the threshold to 4 digits:

  • The number 156 will not be redacted (3 digits, so below the threshold)

  • The number 1564 will be redacted (4 digits, so meets the threshold)

The tables below show how calls will be transcribed and what the audio will sound like when data redaction has been configured to sequences of 1, 2, 3 or 4 digits.

PHI redaction

PHI redaction removes personal identifiers such as names, dates, email addresses, professions, and street addresses from calls and their transcripts. It’s designed for organizations in regulated industries such as healthcare services.

PHI redaction:

  • Can only be enabled by Gong, upon request.

  • Only applies to calls, and the related transcripts

  • Currently only available for English language calls.

Potential impact of redaction on AI insights:
Because PHI redaction removes parts of the audio and transcript, this may affect your use of certain Gong features that rely on those transcripts, such as call summaries, call briefs, call tracker detections, and other analytics provided by Gong.

What doesn’t get redacted with PHI redaction

PHI redaction only affects the call audio and resulting transcript. It doesn't redact:

  • Call metadata (timestamps, participants, recording flags)

  • CRM or calendar fields synced into Gong (for example, meeting invite names and titles)

  • Deal or account fields and other non-content metadata

FAQs

In PHI redaction, are names still visible in the "Next Steps" section of the call page?

Yes. While PHI redaction removes names from the call audio and transcription, we use meeting invite metadata to identify speakers that attended a call. This enables us to display the assigned individuals in the "Next Steps" section, even if their names are redacted from the main transcript.
