Inline prompts let you insert AI-generated, context-aware content into your templates, blocks, and flows.

Write what you’d like Gong to generate between double square brackets [[ ]]. Gong interprets your instruction and creates content based on account context, including past calls and emails and web information.

In addition to inline prompts, other types of placeholders you can use in templates, blocks, and flows include field placeholders, manual placeholders, and custom or third-party field placeholders.

How to use inline prompts

To add inline prompts in templates, blocks, or flows:

  1. Open the template, block, or flow you want to work on

  2. Type your instruction between double square brackets [[ ]] anywhere in the body. Use inline prompts in-line in addition to other text, or as the entire body

    1. Here’s an example of how you could use an inlinen prompt in-line in addition to other text:
      Hey {{recipient.first_name}},

Last time we spoke with recipient.company_name, a few things were top of mind: [[write their main priorities in 2 bullet points]].

Is this still the case? Would love to have a quick conversation to hear what's new with you and tell you what's new with us. Have any time this week?

      Thanks,

      {{Sender.first_name}}

    2. Here’s an example of how you could make the inline prompt the entire body:
[[Compose a short, friendly outreach email to {{recipient.first_name}} at {{account.Name}}.

The email should contain the following parts:

      - Start with a casual greeting: Hi recipient.first_name,

      - Write the top 3 business challenges they are likely facing based on their industry in bullet points

      - Suggest a quick meeting.

      - Wrap up the email with 1 short sentence.]]

Testing inline prompts

  1. Create a template, block, or email within a flow that includes inline prompts

  2. Click Preview

  3. In the preview panel that opens on the right, select a contact

  4. Click Refresh and wait for the generated result to appear

  5. Always review AI-generated content.

Limitations

  • Avoid using inline prompts in auto email steps since you can’t review outputs before sending, and you’ll run the risk of having incorrect or irrelevant content.

  • Inline prompts do not work directly in the email composer. They can only be used in templates, blocks, and flows.

  • Emails with AI-generated content take time to load, so it’s recommended to start small and test before using across all templates or flows.

  • The data source for inline prompts is account-level context. This includes all calls, emails, related contacts, and deals associated with the account. If a prompt fails to generate an email in preview or the composer, it’s typically because the selected person does not have enough past context (calls or emails) in Gong.

  • Emails with inline prompts that didn’t generate will not send and will display an error.

  • When an email was generated with AI, you’ll receive a visual indication in the email composer along with an option to leave feedback.

Recommendations

  • Always review AI-generated text before sending.

  • Be specific in your instructions to get the best possible output. The more context you give, the better the results.

  • Combine inline prompts with variables for richer, more personalized content.

  • Start small. Test inline prompts with short instructions at first and then refine them over time.

  • Inline prompts used in-line are great for openers and post-sales lines, while inline prompts as the entire text body can work well for re-engagement or strategic outreach.

  • When asking a prompt to read web data, be specific about where to find the information. Instruct the AI to name sources and date ranges, and ask it to include a link and the year of the source in the output for user review.

  • To generate an email in a language other than English, you must explicitly specify the desired language within the prompt. The prompt will not automatically generate a non-English email even if the contact is tied to a non-English account.

Inline prompts generate text based on the context of the selected contact, account, or company. To see meaningful output when previewing a template, block, or flow step, select a contact with relevant activity, like meetings or emails.

Inline prompts work best for use cases like upsell, renewal, and closed-lost flows, where Gong already has rich interaction data to draw from.

Depending on the type of outreach you’re doing, you can instruct Gong AI in your inline prompt to rely on web information for better results.
