Field placeholders in Gong include built-in system field placeholders defined by Gong and CRM-field-based field placeholders created by admins. For details on how to configure CRM fields to be field placeholders, see [Create field placeholders](/v1/docs/create-field-placeholders).

The built-in field placeholders provided by Gong are:

| Field placeholder label | Field placeholder description |

## How to add field placeholders to templates and flow emails

Once created, field placeholders can be inserted into templates and flow emails.

**Add field placeholders to the subject**

Where to go: **Engage** > **Templates** > **Select a template or Engage** > **Flows** > **Select a flow** > **Select an email step**

**Click the subject field**. The **Add placeholders** button appears. Click **Field placeholder** to display the menu.

### Add field placeholders to the message body

Where to go: **Engage** > **Templates** > **Select a template** or **Engage** > **Flows** > **Select a flow** > **Select an email step**

Click **Add placeholders** in the toolbar along the bottom and the placeholder menu will be displayed.

## How to use conditional field placeholders

Where to go: **Engage** > **Templates** > **Select a template** or **Engage** > **Flows** > **Select a flow** > **Select an email step**

Conditional field placeholders say "if the specified condition is true, then use this language". Conditional field placeholders can be found in the 'Conditionals' tab of the placeholder menu.

For instance, you can set up a conditional field placeholders to say something like "if there is no company name, then say ___". With these placeholders, you can tell the email composer how to proceed if a statement is true or false. Once you've added a conditional placeholder statement, you can select field placeholders for each part of the statement and add free text between blue tags. Let's look at an example below:

This statement says that if there's a company name available, then say "I'd love to hear about the culture at [recipient company name]". If not, then say "Where are you working these days?"

## How to use scheduling link placeholders

Add scheduling link placeholders to a template or flow email so that whenever a rep selects that template, their personal scheduling link will populate automatically.

Where to go: **Engage** > **Templates** > **Select a template** or **Engage** > **Flows** > **Select a flow** > **Select an email step**

Add scheduling link placeholders to your email template or flow email the same way you would add any other placeholder, under the **Scheduling links** category.

Team members can add their scheduling links under **My Settings** > **Emails** > **View and update scheduling links**.
