# Start a new chat or return to a previous chat in Gong Assistant

Start a new chat in Gong Assistant when you move to a different topic, or return to a previous one to pick up a conversation where you left it. Each chat keeps its own context, and your chat history is personal, so only you can see it.

## Start a new chat

Gong keeps the context of a chat for as long as the chat stays open. A new chat starts without the context of your previous one, so it fits a topic or context you do not want carried over.

**To start a new chat:**

1. Open Gong Assistant:
  - **Gong Assistant page:** From the left sidebar, click **Assistant**.
  - **Panel:** Open Gong Assistant from the call page, Search results, an account panel, or the library. Click **Assistant** at the top right of the page you are working in.
2. Start a new chat:
  - **Gong Assistant page:** Click **New chat** at the top right of the chat.
  - **Panel:** Click the **New chat** icon at the top right of the panel.
3. (Optional) To create a document or build a Gong asset in the new chat, click **Ask** and select **Create** or **Build**.
4. Enter your question or request in the prompt box.
5. Click the **Arrow** icon to send your message.

> Note:
> 
> In your library, moving between folders and streams in the same library keeps your conversation open. Switching between **Your library** and **Company library** starts a new chat. Learn more about [Where you can use Gong Assistant](/v1/docs/choose-a-starting-point-for-gong-assistant).

## Return to a previous chat

Reopen an earlier chat from your chat history to keep asking follow-up questions in the same conversation. The documents and Gong assets you created in that chat are there too.

**To return to a previous chat:**

1. Open Gong Assistant:
  - **Gong Assistant page:** From the left sidebar, click **Assistant**.
  - **Panel:** Open Gong Assistant from the call page, Search results, an account panel, or the library. Click **Assistant** at the top right of the page you are working in.
2. Find your chat history:
  - **Gong Assistant page:** Use the **Chat history** panel, which is always open on the left of the page.
  - **Panel:** Click the **Show history** icon at the top left of the panel.
3. (Optional) In the **Chat history** panel, enter a word or phrase in the **Search chats** box to narrow the list.
4. Select the chat you want to open.
5. Enter a follow-up question or request in the prompt box to continue the conversation. **Note:** Files you uploaded in that chat stay with it.

Any team member can access this feature if they have the required permissions.
