# Record and manage voicemail messages

Record voicemail messages in advance, then drop one with the [Gong Dialer](/v1/docs/make-calls-with-gong) when a prospect you're calling from Engage doesn't pick up. Instead of leaving the same message live on every outreach call, you play a saved one with a single click. Keep your most-used messages at the top of your list.

## Record a voicemail message

Each recording is saved to your personal list, so you can select it when you leave a voicemail during a call.

**To record a voicemail message:**

1. In the top toolbar, click your initials, and select **My settings**.
2. Under **Gong Connect**, click **Manage your voicemails**.
3. Click **+ Record new voicemail**.
4. Enter a name for the voicemail message and click **Record a voicemail**.
5. Once you've finished recording, click the **Play** icon ![Play](https://cdn.us.document360.io/2837c190-3ec8-4120-9116-6d427e774667/Images/Documentation/Play(1).svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-13T09%3A58%3A13Z&se=2026-10-13T10%3A58%3A13Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=VCi7fX5g0PI1qcy2Db9eVgTwnYq35aYBWWTmpKk4soI%3D) to review the recording.
6. Click **Save** if you are happy with the voicemail, or click the **Delete** icon ![Delete](https://cdn.us.document360.io/2837c190-3ec8-4120-9116-6d427e774667/Images/Documentation/remove.svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-13T09%3A58%3A13Z&se=2026-10-13T10%3A58%3A13Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=VCi7fX5g0PI1qcy2Db9eVgTwnYq35aYBWWTmpKk4soI%3D) to start again.

> Note:
> 
> Voicemail recordings must be 60 seconds or shorter. A recording that runs longer is terminated and logged as a dropped call.

## Manage your voicemail messages

You can update, remove, or reorganize saved voicemail messages from **Manage Voicemail Recordings**. The order you set here determines the order recordings appear when you select a voicemail message during a call, so put the ones you use most at the top.

**To manage a voicemail message:**

1. In the top toolbar, click your initials, and select **My settings**.
2. Under **Gong Connect**, click **Manage your voicemails**.
3. Choose what you want to do:
  - **Edit a voicemail message:** Click the **Edit** icon ![Edit](https://cdn.us.document360.io/2837c190-3ec8-4120-9116-6d427e774667/Images/Documentation/Vector%20(2).svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-13T09%3A58%3A13Z&se=2026-10-13T10%3A58%3A13Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=VCi7fX5g0PI1qcy2Db9eVgTwnYq35aYBWWTmpKk4soI%3D) to update the recording or rename it, and save your changes.
  - **Delete a voicemail message:** Click the **Delete** icon ![Delete](https://cdn.us.document360.io/2837c190-3ec8-4120-9116-6d427e774667/Images/Documentation/remove.svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-13T09%3A58%3A13Z&se=2026-10-13T10%3A58%3A13Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=VCi7fX5g0PI1qcy2Db9eVgTwnYq35aYBWWTmpKk4soI%3D) to remove the recording.
  - **Reorder voicemail messages:** Click and drag the **Reorder** icon ![Reorder](https://cdn.us.document360.io/2837c190-3ec8-4120-9116-6d427e774667/Images/Documentation/Reorder.svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-13T09%3A58%3A13Z&se=2026-10-13T10%3A58%3A13Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=VCi7fX5g0PI1qcy2Db9eVgTwnYq35aYBWWTmpKk4soI%3D) next to the recording to a new position in the list.

## Drop a voicemail message during a call

When a call reaches voicemail, you can leave a saved voicemail message instead of recording the message live.

> Dropping a voicemail message before the tone or beep can cut the message short.

**To drop a voicemail message:**

1. Place a call using the [Gong Dialer](/v1/docs/make-calls-with-gong).
2. If there's no answer, wait for the voicemail tone or beep.
3. Click the **Voicemail drop** icon ![Voicemail drop](https://cdn.us.document360.io/2837c190-3ec8-4120-9116-6d427e774667/Images/Documentation/✅ Button.svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-13T09%3A58%3A13Z&se=2026-10-13T10%3A58%3A13Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=VCi7fX5g0PI1qcy2Db9eVgTwnYq35aYBWWTmpKk4soI%3D) to see the list of recorded voicemail messages.
4. Select the voicemail message you want to leave.

The selected voicemail message is played to the recipient's voicemail.

## How does voicemail drop work for recipients?

Recipients receive the message as a standard voicemail that they play back like any other. No action is required from them.

## Frequently asked questions

****Do I need to stay on the call while the voicemail plays?****

No. Once you select a recording after the beep, Gong sends it to the voicemail and you can hang up.
